WINE TOURISM IN PORTUGAL

AN ART PRACTISED WITH THE SENSES

.// The flat landscapes, the plains full of vineyards or the celebration of the traditional grape harvest are postcards with colours, pronunciations and aromas that are irremediably Portuguese... From north to south, west to east, the wine-growing culture, deeply rooted in Portugal’s history, has always been an undeniable element of its identity and a calling card that, from the unique culture of wine, invites you on an immersive journey into the deep roots of the country, recognised as a producer of top-class wines and as one of the most sought-after wine tourism destinations for oenophiles who want unique experiences.

The vineyards cultivated on slopes along steep hillsides immediately give away where we are. We are in Douro, a region that benefits from a microclimate and sun exposure that promote the perfect ripening of the grapes and where its schist soils also give the wines a distinct character and unrivalled mineral complexity.

And it is precisely here, in Douro, that we begin this sensory journey... Around the table, at A Cozinha da Clara, with a privileged view of the river that lends its name to the region. In this restaurant, at Quinta de La Rosa, the inspiration is traditional and from Trás-os-Montes, but the secret lies in the fusion with the contemporary and in the balanced harmonisation with the best wines from Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. For the most demanding enthusiasts, the gastronomic offer in the Douro region extends to private lunches or dinners in vineyards or intimate cooking workshops.

A visit to the Douro wouldn’t be complete without exploring its farms and wineries, many of which were designed by architects and have already won several architectural awards. After all, some of the best wines in the world are produced right here. Immersing yourself in the world of wine and getting to know the complete winemaking process is therefore a unique experience, where wine comes to life through the voice of its own producers. The Vallado, Manoella and Vale Meão estates are excellent options to consider, not only for visiting their unique terroirs, but above all for the quality of their productions. A discerning curation of Port wines or Douro whites and reds can be tasted in private and exclusive tastings.

Finally, Quinta do Crasto, a century old house on the banks of the River Douro, or Quinta da Vacaria, which recently opened a 5 star boutique hotel in the heart of the oldest delimited wine region in the world, are incomparable refuges that live in perfect communion with nature and wine culture. The most demanding travellers can count on carefully planned itineraries, from private Douro cruises to breathtaking helicopter tours, every moment is designed to stimulate the senses.

From the Douro we head to the Dão, where the harsh winters and hot summers provide the ideal conditions for growing high quality grapes and producing elegant, balanced table wines. This is the main reason why visiting farms and listening to their producers during unforgettable tastings is an essential part of a trip to a territory that offers a combination of ancient vineyards and discreet modernity.

Hidden in the serene hills of the Dão, we find Quinta de Lemos, a true “jewel” of the region, whose nectars are the fruit of patient and experienced hands that have dedicated themselves to looking after the region’s indigenous grape varieties. As well as exceptional wines, Quinta de Lemos expresses its genuine flavours at the table, more specifically at Mesa de Lemos, the restaurant which, under the creative direction of chef Diogo Rocha, has already won a Michelin star for its sustainable gastronomy.

To prolong the experience, serene hideaways in the heart of the vineyards are a must stay. Located between the Estrela and Caramulo mountains, the Valverde Santar Hotel and Spa offers a deeply intimate stay. This aristocratic 17th century manor house is set in four hectares of vineyards, so it enjoys an intimate connection with nature and offers a range of outdoor activities, such as picnics, pilates and yoga. For the more fearless gastronomic lovers, this hotel has designed personalised or group cooking classes with chef Luís Almeida.

The Alentejo is the next stop on this route, where you’ll also find wineries that are true architectural master pieces. The undulating plains as far as the eye can see and the typical slowing down of the region leave no room for doubt. Its great diversity of soils and the Mediterranean climate that qualifies it are some of the condiments that contribute to the production of exceptional nectars. Esporão, Tapada de Coelheiros and “Dez Tostões” feature on the Alentejo wine list and emphasise this premise. To get to know their origins, the ideal is to discover the estates and embark on the exclusive experiences they offer.Tastingsinthe terroirs, dinners in the vineyards at sunset and, for the more fearless enthusiasts, 4x4 trips and hikes through the vineyards are just some of the options in the south. The wine tour ends at São Lourenço do Barrocal-Hotel & Monte Alentejano, amid vineyards, holm oaks and centuries old olive trees. To extend the experience in the heart of the Alentejo, here the list of activities is vast and eclectic. Hot air balloon rides, boat or horse rides, pottery workshops and even grape harvests are just some of the activities offered by this boutique hotel. But if your plan is to immerse yourself in absolute (and well deserved) relaxation, this is also the place to do it, perhaps under a starry sky like no other.

In retrospect, what we take away from this trip goes beyond the simple act of drinking. A visit to Portugal is and will always be about people, culture, reinvented tradition and generosity. So let’s celebrate. A toast!
