Santos-Dumont Rewind stands out not only for its bordeaux dial, but also, and above all, for the way it displays time: backwards.
Among the new Santos-Dumont watches for 2024, the highlight is the Rewind model, a limited edition of 200 pieces in platinum with a vibrant burgundy dial, which displays time backwards. Using the collection's characteristic Roman numerals on the dial, the hour markers are inverted, meaning that the time indicated at 11 o'clock actually indicates 1 o'clock using the “I”, while the time indicated at 1 o'clock is actually 11 o'clock and therefore uses the “XI”, and so on.
The Santos-Dumont Rewind owes its unusual layout to the 230 MC caliber, which offers reverse rotation and manual winding. The hands therefore rotate counterclockwise. To preserve the slender aesthetics of the case, instead of adding a new element to the caliber 230 MC, Cartier has reworked the following elements of the caliber 430MC: the barrel, the escape wheel, the anchor, and the geometry of the barrel bridge to accommodate a reverse latch.
